Hi everyone. If you want to see what I'm up to in Washington, click here.
    Dr G
Conor D- Hey Dr. G do we have to know all of the functional groups from ch 20?
Dr G: you should know the same functional groups you were supposed to know before: aromatics, alcohols, amines, carboxylic acids, amides and esters.
    Henry: Dr. G,
    1. How much detail do we need to go into for making a solution?
    2. I'm still having trouble determining whether the shift is left or right for equilibrium. Any tips?
    Thanks
Dr G: 1. The same expectation as for your test. 4 or 5 sentences. For a solid: First show your work on the calculation. Then explain how you would dissolve the solid (dissolve the solid completely in most of the water in a beaker) and then finish by transferring to a graduated cylinder and adding water until the final volume is correct. But use the correct amounts in your answer. You use the "dilution formula" for calculating the amount needed when you make a solution by dilution.
    2. For LeChatelier's Principle, the system always shifts in the direction that is the OPPOSITE of the imposed change. When you add more of something, it shifts in the direction that uses it up. When you increase pressure, it shifts to the side that reduces pressure. When you add heat, it shifts in the direction that uses up heat. If you want to practice, I'm planning to come in by 10 AM tomorrow morning.
Henry: Thanks Dr. G. I have my Chinese exam but I might stop by after.
